FUNCTIONS AND MECHANISM OF ACTION
Vitamin C is an essential micronutrient that supports the immune system by providing antioxidant activity
against reactive oxygen species. Vitamin C supports the body's defense system by enhancing white blood cell
function and activity, as well as promote interferon levels, antibody responses, and secretion of thymic
hormones. Additionally, it maintains healthy mast cell function and supports lymphocyte formation.‡
Vitamin D provides general cellular support, in part by supporting immune cell activity, and maintaining healthy
cell metabolism. In a clinical trial, Vitamin D supplementation was shown to support Vitamin D-regulated genes
associated with immune function, response to stress, and DNA repair. Vitamin D also supports healthy immune
cell activation due to the presence of vitamin D receptors in immune cells, including lymphocytes and
macrophages.‡
Zinc is a cofactor for over 300 enzymes and is essential for a wide range of physiological functions, including
the regulation of intracellular signaling pathways in innate and adaptive immune cells. The homeostasis of zinc
is particularly important for cell maturation and cell differentiation, cell cycle progression, and proper functioning
of immune cells. In addition, zinc supports the body’s defense system by promoting healthy neutrophil, natural
killer cell, and T-lymphocyte function.
